About Dr Hungwe

Dr Hungwe is a specialist psychiatrist with a passion for helping people become the best version of themselves by managing their mental health in a holistic manner. Dr Hungwe has special interests in autism spectrum, neurocognitive disorders and adolescent psychiatry but treats all psychiatric illnesses and has extensive experience in treating a wide range of psychiatric disorders.

Dr Hungwe is known for stating psychiatry as one of the big loves of her life and above all else loves seeing her patients thrive in body, mind and soul. Her goal is for every patient to have a healthy brain and fulfilled life and she uses her scientific background and clinical experience to achieve lasting health.

Education

Dr Hungwe has always had a passion for science and obtained a BSC in microbiology and physiology from UCT. She then went on to study medicine at WITS university where her interest in psychiatry grew consistently over the years. After achieving her medical degree in 2014 she endeavoured to work in as many provinces as she could to optimise her clinical acumen and
managed to gain experience in Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, The Eastern Cape and Limpopo before eventually settling in the western cape.

Dr Hungwe specialised at Wits university and was awarded the Louis Franklin Freed Prize for the most distinguished Mmed in her year. During her specialisation Dr Hungwe developed a love for research in psychiatry and has won awards for her research and presentations.

Training

Following the completion of her specialisation, she worked at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg academic hospital as a consultant psychiatrist and was involved in research activities and teaching as well as clinical work.

Currently Dr Hungwe is based in her private practice in somerset west and admits patients when necessary to Lifepath Helderberg clinic. Dr Hungwe works closely with psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and general practitioners in the somerset west area and believes wholeheartedly in the value of a multidisciplinary team. Her passion for research and teaching continues in the private sector and she has given CPD accredited talks both in South Africa and internationally.
